Q.「じゅりあ」って英語名ですか？ - Is your name "Julia" an English name?
A. 日本語名です！「海外の人にも日本の人にも覚えやすいように」と名付けてくれました。- It's both for Japanese and English! My mother wanted anyone from overseas and even Japan to find my name easy and catchy to remember.
Q. 日本語ネイティブですか？ - Are you a native Japanese?
A. 日本生まれの日本育ち。高校をニュージーランドで卒業しました。現在は日本に住んでいます。- Born and raised in Japan. Graduated an high school in New Zealand, but I am currently living in Japan.
Q.なぜ日本語を教え始めたのですか？- Why did you start teaching Japanese?
A. 日本人として空っぽだと気付いたから。- Because I noticed that I knew nothing about Japan.
ニュージーランドで留学していた時、日本についてたくさん聞かれました。「日本の国鳥は？」「着物ってどうやって着るの？」「日本の政治についてどう思う？」
何も答えられませんでした。なぜなら「日本に興味がなかった」から。でもそれは、日本人として生まれてきた自分を無駄にしていると気づきました。
私の中ですぐに日本を生かせるもの、それは日本語を教えることでした。- When I was in New Zealand to improve my English, many of my classmates seemed curious about my country and asked - "What's the national bird of Japan?"
"How do you wear Kimono?" "What do you think about the Japanese politics?" Unfortunately, I couldn't answer any of them because I was not interested in Japan. Such experiences made me realised that I had been wasting myself as someone who was born as a Japanese. The only thing I could do as a Japanese at that time was to teach them Japanese.
